Men and Women Prefer Different Lip Sizes, According to Studies
Study Reveals Surprising Differences in Lip Size Preferences Between Genders. In a world where beauty trends constantly evolve, a recent study has uncovered key differences in how men and women perceive the ideal lip size. Participants rated digitally altered images of faces, revealing that men tend to prefer natural or thinner lips on women, while women often favor fuller lips — especially on other women.
Interestingly, even isolated images of lips affected attractiveness ratings, showing lip size is seen as an independent feature of beauty. These results align with the growing popularity of lip fillers on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where full lips are often promoted as the ideal.
This has given rise to a phenomenon called “lip dysmorphia” — a distorted self-image caused by repeated exposure to unrealistic beauty standards. The study sparked discussion online, with many noting a disconnect between what men actually find attractive and the beauty standards women often feel pressured to meet.

One photographer observed that many women get lip injections despite not loving the results, due to social pressure or the belief that bigger lips equal youth.

Professor Alais emphasized that lip enhancements may appeal more to women than to men and warned of the psychological effects of constant exposure to altered beauty ideals.

This research sheds light on how societal influences and peer pressure can shape self-image and drive cosmetic choices — even when those choices don’t align with true preferences.
