Beautiful detail on Ozzy Ozbourne’s casket revealed as family and fans say goodbye

Ozzy Osbourne Laid to Rest in Birmingham: Fans and Family Honor the Prince of Darkness. Ozzy Osbourne has been laid to rest, with fans from around the world gathering in his hometown of Birmingham, England to pay their final respects to the legendary Black Sabbath frontman. On July 30, 2025, a public funeral procession made its way through the city ahead of a private family funeral.

One particularly touching detail stood out: a floral arrangement in deep purple shades spelling out “Ozzy”, a color long associated with his iconic image. Known to fans as the “Prince of Darkness,” Ozzy passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76. His family released a statement at the time saying he died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones, and asked for privacy during their time of mourning.

Tributes came pouring in from around the globe, with figures like Elton John and Rod Stewart paying their respects. Ozzy had lived with various health challenges for years, including being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003, which he publicly revealed in 2019. He often spoke openly about his experience and supported research through millions in charitable donations.

Earlier in July 2025, Ozzy gave what became his final live performance—a farewell concert in Birmingham with Black Sabbath, raising over £1 million for medical research and children’s charities.

During the funeral procession, which moved along Broad Street, the hearse stopped at the Black Sabbath Bridge, where fans had gathered, leaving flowers and handwritten messages on the commemorative bench dedicated to Ozzy. Birmingham’s Lord Mayor, Zafar Iqbal, described the event as a fitting tribute, saying it was important for the city to honor Ozzy’s legacy properly.

The Osbourne family personally covered the expenses of the procession. As the brass band Bostin Brass played songs such as Iron Man, the hearse paused at the bridge, where Sharon Osbourne and children Kelly, Jack, and Aimee joined fans in a moment of remembrance. Sharon, visibly emotional, was comforted by her children as they read tributes to the beloved husband and father.

Ozzy and Sharon were together for over four decades. In a 2022 interview, Sharon reflected on their lifelong bond: “For over 52 years, we have been friends, lovers, husband and wife, grandparents, and soulmates.” Ozzy once called Sharon. “the only one I’ve ever loved in my life.”

Aesthetically known for his gothic and dramatic persona, Ozzy often wore purple-tinted glasses and even covered songs like “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix. That signature color was honored one final time through the purple floral tribute at his casket.

More than a decade earlier, in a 2011 column for The Times, Ozzy described how he wanted his funeral to be lighthearted: “I don’t care what they play at my funeral… I just want it to be a celebration, not a mope-fest.”
He joked about including pranks, like:
“a video of me asking my doctor for a second opinion on his diagnosis of ‘death.’”

His final farewell echoed those wishes—a celebration of life, filled with music, love, and a city standing together to honor the man who helped shape the sound of heavy metal. Rest in peace, Ozzy Osbourne.
